MIAS Level 1+2 Leadership Training 
Course location: Plymouth / Burrator + Dartmoor        Course cost: £185 (includes assessment, logbook +  certificate)
Level 1 is for those wishing to lead rides on non-technical terrain (forest tracks, canal towpaths etc).
Level 2 is aimed at those who wishing to lead rides on technical (rocky / demanding terrain).

Our course options:
Weekend training and assessment -for experienced riders, or existing outdoor pursuits instructors, who's skills already meet the assessment
criteria (see bottom right).  Training will be done on the Saturday and assessment on the Sunday.
Split training and assessment - for less experienced riders who's skills do not already meet the assessment criteria (see bottom right). 
The training and assessment days take place approximately 4 weeks appart, to allow candidates a consolidation period in which to prepare for their assessment.
Private courses - if you have a group of 4 or more wanting to attain the MIAS Level 1 or 2 qualification, we can set up a course at a date
to suit.  Please email us for details.

Assessment

You will be asked to navigate and lead the group between two pre-determined points. You will be expected to either teach a skill or coach an activity appropriate for the group. You will also be asked to demonstrate competence as a mountain bike rider, and have a sound understanding of basic bike mechanics. You will need to be able to comfortably complete a demanding 30km off road ride at a moderate pace.

The Level 1 & Level 2 courses are run together. The candidates & Instructor will decide during the training period which assessment the candidate will undergo; Level 1 or Level 2.  The course consists of training and assessment in two days.

Examples of applications of the qualification:
*Teachers using level 1 to bring mountain biking into their curriculum, and level 2 to lead more demanding rides e.g. during aspirations week.
*Military personnel leading groups in Adventure Trainng.
*Outdoor Pursuits instructors looking to expand their repertoire.
*Cycling club members looking for accreditation to lead group rides.

Further requirements
In order to practice as a mountain bike instructor you will also need a relelvant first aid certificate (preferably an outdoor course).

You will also need insurance. Basic policies are available from the CTC and from the ABCC.

NCFE
Our course has been accredited under our NCFE IIQ Licence and the course measurable learning outcomes have been benchmarked at Level 2 (using Ofqual’s Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) level descriptors) to allow you to consider the depth of study, difficulty, and level of achievement involved.
 
Standard Learning Credit Scheme
The MIAS Level 1+2 qualification is accepted under the Standard Learning Credit Scheme, SLC, for all regular MOD personnel. More information is available from DIN 2008DIN07-103.
